Agnes Newton Keith was born in Chelsea, Vermont, July 17, 1874. She was the youngest of five children. In 1887, Keith graduated from Chelsea High School with honors and became the first woman to graduate from the University of Vermont. She taught school for a year before she moved with her family to New York City where she attended the College of the City of New York for two years
She then moved to California, where she taught at a high school in Los Angeles for seven years. In 1900, she married William H. Keith, a professor at Berkeley College and was a member of the author's circle in Oakland, California.
